158. It’s Bloody Complicated – Start Spreading the Blues: What do the US Midterm Results Mean for Us? with Grace Mausser

Online

Last week, midterm elections were held in the USA and it proved a historic night for the Democratic Party. We saw what many termed a ‘blue wave’, as Democrat candidates swept victories across the entire country.

They managed to flip both arms of their legislature, the House of Representatives and the Senate, from Republican control. In the House, the Republicans had a majority of 1 – the Democrats now have a majority of 35-60 (25 results still TBA at time of writing). In the Senate, the Republicans had a majority of 3 – the Democrats now have a majority of up to 4 (Mississippi and Alaska races still TBA).

Some of the higher-profile Senate races also included some legitimately historic results – in Texas, James Talarico became the first Democratic Senator since 1988. In Kansas, Adam Hamilton became the first Democratic Senator since 1939. And in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim to be elected Senator.

This was a historic set of results. To break it all down and figure out what it means we are joined by Grace Mausser, Co-Chair of the New York City branch of the Democratic Socialists of America.
