This will feature Compass board member and MP Jon Cruddas, who will be discussing his new book A Century of Labour.

Britain’s first Labour government took office on 22 January 1924. Its centenary provides an opportunity to reassess the party’s performance over the last 100 years, and with an election pending, the character and purpose of the modern party.

Why has Labour won so few elections since 1945 and changed too little?

Which personalities have divided the party and who has united it?

And if Labour wins again – how will they govern?

Jon will outline the scope of the book and a panel of thinkers, including political theorist Marc Stears and Francesca Klug, human rights academic, will respond. As we approach the next election it will be a unique opportunity to assess not just Labour’s past, present and future but Labour’s relationship to other parties and forces.
