Events in Liverpool during Labour Party Conference

Compass is organising and participating in a range of events on politics, progressive alliances and universal basic income to coincide with the Labour Party conference. All events are free, outside the secure zone and open to all, so if you’re in Liverpool, come say hi at one of the events listed below. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

We’ve also just released a podcast series, with the most recent episode explaining the different factions in the party and where they come from to coincide with the Labour leadership election. Have a listen and let us know what you think. Hopefully, this will be the first in a series looking at different political parties.

Sunday 25 September

1. Power & Politics in the 21st Century

@3 – 5pm, The Theatre,  Black-E, 1 Great George Street, Liverpool.

The dawn of the 21st century saw much talk of a new age of leaderless, networked politics powered by social media. But we’ve also seen the failures that can come from a lack of direction or decisive leadership. How do we balance horizontalism with the need for effective political strategy?

Speakers:
Hillary Wainwright – Red Pepper Editor
Jeremy Gilbert – Cultural Theorist
Alex Williams – Author & Academic
Jacqui Howard – National Organiser, Compass
Chair: Neal Lawson – Director Compass

2. The alternative: towards a progressive politics
@6 – 7.15pm, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Liverpool

This event launches The Alternative, a book based on two premises – that working together with like-minded people produces better outcomes, and the UK may have reached the point where only some form of ‘progressive alliance’ will ever deliver a left-of-centre government – it is a collection of essays compiled jointly by a leading Labour MP (Lisa Nandy), a Liberal Democrat (Chris Bowers), and a Green (Caroline Lucas). It covers policies and values that could unite the progressives, and looks at the possible mechanics for cooperation.

Speakers:
Lisa Nandy MP
Caroline Lucas MP
Chris Bowers
Chair: Jacqui Howard, Compass

Monday 26 September

1. Building a Progressive Majority
@5 – 7pm, The Studio,  Black-E, 1 Great George Street, Liverpool.

With declining turnout and Scottish Labour’s collapse, how can we build a winning social coalition and translate it into a parliamentary majority? This session will analyse 2020 election, look at the case for electoral reform and ask whether a cross-party progressive coalition is the way forwards.

Clive Lewis MP – Shadow Secrety of Defense
Rhea Wolfson – Labour Party NEC
Caroline Lucas MP – Green Party Co-Leader
