The New Frontier: What is the Future of Progressive Politics in Wales?

Kevin Morgan, Gus Williams

May 2026 is almost certain to deliver the most seismic shift Welsh politics has seen since devolution in 1999: Labour no longer being the largest party in the Senedd.

All polling points to Plaid Cymru and Reform becoming the two largest parties in Wales. But, as Wales has always seen, the progressive majority will far outweigh that of the Right. With a new driver in the seat, this will become a pivotal moment in the shaping the future of progressive politics; not just in Wales, but the first step in the new politics of Britain at-large.

The New Frontier brings together two experts in ideas and business – Kevin Morgan (Professor of Governance and Development, Cardiff University) and Gus Williams (CEO, Chambers Wales & Member of the Welsh Industrial Development Advisory Board) – to discuss the policies and political infrastructure that progressives in Wales need to build to ensure that the moment is not spurned.
