New Power: A Progressive Operating System for the 21st Century

Online

The world is changing fast, and we need a new politics to meet the challenge.

Join Compass and Labour Together at 6pm on Tuesday 16th March for the launch of a new project that will bring together a network of activists, theorists, politicians, practitioners and groups across civil society, in the UK and globally. Together we will explore how progressives can respond to a new networked era.

Old power works like a currency. It is held by few. Once gained, it is jealously guarded, and the powerful have a substantial store of it to spend. It is closed, inaccessible, and leader-driven. It downloads, and it captures.

New power operates differently, like a current. It is made by many. It is open, participatory, and peer-driven. It uploads, and it distributes. Like water or electricity, it’s most forceful when it surges. The goal with new power is not to hoard it but to channel it.

How can the new power of horizontal networks meet the old power of the vertical state to create a new progressive operating system for the 21st century – not just for politics, but for public services, enterprises and communities?

To discuss this and more, we’ll be joined by some of the key thinkers and practitioners in this field, including:

  • Jeremy Heimans, co-author of New Power
  • Steve Reed MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government
  • Shana Roberts, community activist in Telford
  • Dr Sue Goss, writer, political scientist and system enabler
  • Jason Stockwood, entrepreneur and investor

We need to address how politics, economics and society operate at every level. We must build a way of deciding and doing things that is much more democratic, egalitarian and productive.

This event is open to all. Register here to attend.
