These are turbulent times. Internationally the plight of those desperate to escape persecution is front of mind. The unfolding humanitarian disaster is testing our institutional arrangements and relationships. At home the dust may have settled on the General Election but the fallout from the result will hang over us for many years to come. And as we embark on a new period for Labour with a new leader a space is opening up to think about how we really want to “do” politics and what we would like to see change.

Unlike traditional conferences where you rarely have the opportunity to take part we want October’s event to be a space where you can both listen to experts and bring your own ideas to share. Politics is a team sport so come to take part.

The event is a collaboration between a number of Sheffield-based groups and Compass, who have been hosting  Radical Hope conferences ready in cities across the country. This event will have a Sheffield and Yorkshire focus – we will be looking at big issues from a local and regional perspective.

The four themes are:

  • Climate change
  • Devolution, the North and city regions
  • Tackling inequality and promoting fairness – Sheffield’s Fairness Commission
  • The EU and the referendum.

Confirmed so far to help lead the discussions:

  • Peter Hetherington from the Guardian
  • Professor Alan Walker, Chair of Sheffields Fairness Commission
  • Paul Blomfield MP
  • Anna Watson, Green Britain of the Year
  • Maurice Glasman, Blue Labour
  • Vicky Seddon, Chair Unlock Democracy
  • Linda MacAvan MEP (tbc)
  • Guppi Bola,  New Economics Foundation (tbc)

A big part of the day will be ‘open space’ groups where you decide what you want to discuss so that you can get together with others who want to develop similar ideas and actions. We hope that this day will result in action – people joining existing groups or setting up new initiatives.
