The Electoral Case for a Deeper Democratic Approach

Jess Garland

Voters are often cynical about pledges made by politicians. But there is a way to turn that cynicism on its head and utilise it to turn out voters. The answer is deeper democracy.

In The Electoral Case for a Deeper Democratic Approach, Jess Garland explains how embracing and championing democratic reform is necessary for political parties to gain electoral credibility; and for their ability to deliver solutions to the crises we face from the climate emergency and inequality to preparedness for future pandemics.

Voters do not see our system as effective at solving problems like climate change, crime or housing. A feeling of powerlessness cuts across electoral divides, shared by 90% of Remain voters and 88% of Leave voters and 77% who think that ordinary citizens have little or no influence on government blame the political system.

It’s clear that parties’ credibility on any policy is inseparable from their commitment to democratic reform.

The party that seizes this agenda and champions it confidently stands to gain electorally.

Unlock Democracy and Compass are working together on a Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust funded project to build consensus around a new democratic settlement. With a focus on the Labour Party, other progressive parties and civil society campaigners, we are looking to create the conditions for a new 21st century democratic settlement for our nations, communities and citizens.
