In place of cuts: new debate announced

Thursday, October 29 2009

We're pleased to announce our next high-profile Westminster Debate held in the run-up to the Pre-Budget Report and coinciding with the launch of our new publication In Place of Cuts. The event takes place on Wednesday 25 November from 6pm - 7.30pm in Parliament (room TBC). Confirmed speakers include: Angela Eagle MP; Polly Toynbee, The Guardian; Prof George Irvin and chaired by Neal Lawson.

Debate has moved on from a credit crunch and an economic recession caused in large part by the excesses of bankers, to now include a discussion on public expenditure and public services cuts. Those at the top have been bailed out by the public, while those at the bottom will have pay and benefits frozen and services cut. We simply cannot allow this to happen.

This event will launch the latest report published by Compass which will set out an alternative to the cuts agenda - challenging our unfair tax regime it calls for a more progressive tax system and sets out a clear vision for the future.
