End the Big 6 Energy Fix: the story so far
Our new campaign End the Big Six Energy Fix has got off to an excellent start. The campaign was launched on Friday 10 February on the front page of The Independent, with the newspaper endorsing and adopting the campaign in its editorial coupled with a lead letter and a comment piece by Green Party Leader Caroline Lucas MP. In just over a week more than 8000 have already signed the online petition, making this the fastest growing Compass campaign in the organisation's 8 years of existence.
Then on the Saturday the campaign again featured on The Independent’s front page for the second day in a row, with warnings that the big six are set to make windfall profits totalling £15bn for 2011.
On the Monday The Independent reported that deaths from hypothermia have doubled in the last five years.
By the following Friday the campaign secured a further front page news story in The Independent when energy regulator OFGEM responded to the campaign by threatening energy companies with price caps and an inquiry – in effect advocating two of the campaign’s policies in our three point energy plan. Demonstrating that End the Big Six Energy Fix is already having a significant influence on the public policy debate.
Whilst on Saturday the front page of the I paper and The Independent reported our YouGov polling with Friends of the Earth that showed nearly 9 in 10 people support an independent public inquiry into the big six, whilst over two thirds support a levy. This was also reported in The Mirror.
End the Big Six Energy Fix will be providing further media comment and analysis when Centrica’s profits are released this coming Thursday.
