The UK now has one of the highest levels of personal debt in the world - in April this year the British people owed over £1,460bn in private debt. Debt has become part and parcel of everyday life - many of us owe money on a credit card, loan or overdraft. Borrowing money can be beneficial, personally and economically, as is the case with student loans, business loans and mortgages. However, there is a tipping point at which borrowing becomes detrimental to the borrower.

The Parliamentary Labour Party will meet tonight and discuss whether the government should legislate for a referendum on Electoral Reform. There are moves afoot to block this proposal. Compass believes that Electoral Reform is an important step in building a politics of democracy and equality.

High Pay - Now lobby your MP
Thank you to all activists that helped send a thousand emails to the Chancellor demanding the establishment of a High Pay Commission. This week a report by the corporate governance body Pirc and pension fund Railpen shows an inverse correlation between the cash paid to executives and the performance of the FTSE All-Share index. In the FTSE 100 where cash payments to executives increased by 80% between 2000 and 2008 the FTSE 100 fell by 30%. We cannot allow these obscene rewards for failure to continue.
