The Communitarian Face-Off

A left V right debate
18:00 to 19:30, 15 July 2009
Main Hall, The Abbey Centre, 34 Great Smith Street, SW1P 3BU

Speakers: Jon Cruddas MP for Dagenham; Neal Lawson, Chair of Compass; Oliver Letwin MP for West Dorset; Phillip Blond

Our economy is bust. Our politics are bust. In the context of the current political and economic turmoil in the UK, can communitarianism offer an alternative, ethics-driven model of a political economy? What would a progressive communitarian agenda look like from a conservative and a left-of-centre perspective? How far should the state be involved in our family and community lives, both on an everyday basis and with regard to issues such as anti-social behaviour, manners and character-building, and offender rehabilitation within the community?

Oliver Letwin MP and Phillip Blond will defend the conservative corner against Jon Cruddas MP and Neal Lawson, Chair of Compass, on the left.
