AGM information for members

Our annual general meeting (AGM) – where members decide about Compass’ future – takes place on Saturday 6th April from 3.30pm at Mary Ward House in London.

As a member of Compass, you are warmly invited to attend. At the AGM, you’ll get to hear about, and then discuss, our proposals to change the organisation’s governance, so that Compass can become more effective and influential. You will also meet some of the excellent people we have recruited for our new Board – and vote to say whether you agree with us that these are the right people to help make the organisation more powerful.

The proposals for change are the result of a thorough process that included consulting Compass members through an online survey and a workshop. We are excited about the proposed changes: they will help make Compass more effective. We’ve summarised our proposals and the reasoning behind them here.

One of the big changes that we propose is to replace the elected Management Committee with a recruited Board and a representative Council. The Council is where political and strategic direction-setting happens and a number of Compass members will be on it, selected at random from those who put their name forward. Let us know if you want to enter the draw (via the online forms linked below) and you might be Council member soon!

We have recruited most, but not all, of the prospective Compass Board members now. You can find out more about those who are up for confirmation at the AGM here.

The final change that we propose, and that the AGM will vote on, is to change Compass’ legal entity from a rather risky unincorporated association to a more secure, not-for-profit limited company. Nothing about what we do or what we stand for will change, we’re just making Compass stronger. We’re asking you to apply to become a member of the ‘new’ Compass, so that you can continue to use your democratic rights, and – for starters – cast your votes about the proposed Board members.

Of course, the AGM is also the place and the moment to look back on what we have done since the previous AGM. We are proud to share with you our Annual Report 2018, which will be put to a vote at the AGM.

If you cannot attend the AGM, you can still vote on the proposals. You can use this online form to let us know what you think of our proposals.

If you are planning to attend, we would love to hear from you in advance, so that we know who’s coming and get some paperwork out of the way before the AGM. Please use this online form to confirm your attendance.

Here’s a handy overview of all the links, once again:

Without our members, there would be no Compass. Thank you for everything you do! We are looking forward to welcoming you at the AGM to discuss Compass’ future with us.

P.S. The AGM is preceded by our exciting conference Leaving the 20th Century – get your tickets now for a day of new politics with John Harris, Siân Berry, Clive Lewis, Lisa Nandy, Paul Mason and many others.
